Although others on the forums have discussed this noise, it absolutely baffles me that there hasn't been louder complaints. It sounds like the brakes on a train when you accelerate at partial throttle. I initially thought there was a major problem with the turbo, only to find out it's apparently a normal characteristic. I had an Injen short ram intake and ended up reinstalling my OEM intake (sad). It's super loud if you have an aftermarket intake that doesn't have a sound baffling filter box. I currently have an X47R hybrid turbo and although its a great turbo, one thing I want to caution you about the X47 and X47R turbo specifically that I wish I realized before I decided to go with this setup is that the thing WHISTLES LIKE A BANSHEE FROM HELL. If someone really loves the stock turbo and blew theirs up it would be a great minor upgrade IMO, but for the 300 whp+ goal its not quite there from what I'd seen. I'm trying to dial in the traction next though, then I might go hunting that bit more power (20-30whp).įor me a Hybrid just wasn't a big enough return / potential for the money and time of the swap. I'm hopeful to get back 2nd and 3rd with an LSD and bigger tires, but 1st will probably always be a rowdy ride, especially if I ever get more fueling / more power. I wanted something that could rush through a corner mid gear and then rip down a straight and I think I've found it in the S280. I'll be doing an LSD and 215s soon, but that's another $2500-3000 to try and use the power I made after spending $10000 to make the power.īig turbos will be easier to avoiding spinning as they spool more gradually, but not a whole lot of people like that kind of powerband. Even with the power I'm making that super quick spool means 1st, 2nd, and about half of third spin with 205 tires. It's a cat and mouse game of wanting more, making more, then trying to make what you made usable. I'm not new to FWD platforms trying to make 3-400 whp or more and I can say that it only gets harder and harder to enjoy the power the more you make. My S280 results are in this post here, on a mustang dyno that reads stock STI around 260-270 whp. I recently went with an S280 because it looked like one of the best split differences between about 300 whp and very little lag, and with a few other mods I was able to match a stock turbo spool. The problem with platforms like these cars is limited tire sizes and only 2 wheels to send the power through.
